Bir ragbi birliği maçı 40′ar dakikalık iki devre olarak oynanır. Çocuk maçları daha kısa olabilir. Bir hakem, iki taç hakemi (İngilizce: touch judge) ve çoğu profesyonel maçta bir de kamera hakemi (İngilizce: television match official [TMO]) vardır. Takımlar 15′er kişiden oluşur. Rakibinden daha fazla sayı yapan taraf maçı kazanır.
Sayı kazanmanın yolları “try yapmak” ya da “gol atmak” tır.
Try
Try, topu kale sahası (İng: in-goal) zeminine dokundurmaktır ve 5 puan değerindedir.
Gol
Gol atmak için ise, topun kale direkleri arasındaki çıtanın üzerinden aşırtılması gerekir. Ragbi birliği maçında değişik puan değerlerine sahip üç çeşit gol vardır:
Açık alanda top yere çarptıktan hemen sonra şut çekerek atılan “drop gol”. Bu tür gol 3 puan değerindedir.
Faul sonucu verilen penaltı sayesinde atılan gol. Penaltı atışı, sabit bir noktadan şut çekilerek veya drop gol şeklinde gerçekleştirilebilir. 3 puan değerindedir.
Try yapan takıma verilen şut hakkı. Top sabit halde iken veya yere çarptıktan sonra yapılabilir. 2 puan değerindedir.

1 – 3 (Tighthead-Loosehead Props)(if the head is out of the scrum, its called “loosehead”, if the head is in the scrum then its called “tighthead”)
2 Hooker
4 – 5 Locks could be defined as second row lock forwards as well (number 4 is the impact lock and has the strength, number 5 has got the pace, mobility, skills and usually more height)
6 [(Loose Forward)] could be defined as open side flanker.
7 Flanker could be defined as blind side flanker.
8 Number 8
9 Scrum Half or “half-back”
10 Fly-Half
12 Inside Centre
13 Outside Centre
11 – 14 Wing number 11 is the left wing and number 14 is the right wing however they could shift sides if there is an ongoing spontaneously formed game strategy which require them to swap but it won’t last until the end of the game due to their high specialities on their own sides.
15 Fullback
